Welcome to at present’s Picture of the Day! Right here we’ve got a unbelievable rarity on this planet of firearms that don’t appear like firearms. This can be a Remington canine’s head cane gun. These puppies (hehe) have been constructed from 1866 till 1888 in small numbers. They’re distinctive in that they take a self-contained cartridge and their mechanism is totally hidden. The muzzle is a metal-capped piece the place the consumer may plug the barrel with a chunk of cork or a patch so filth wouldn’t block it or overly hinder the bore. The canes head can be pulled open and a cartridge positioned within the camber. The top would then be pushed and cocked into place, it’s cock-on-close. A small spherical button is hid on the underside of the cane deal with and acts as a set off when pressed.
“Manufactured between 1866 and 1888, the Cane Gun was Remington’s introduction to the cartridge longarm market, and was marketed as a protection in opposition to canines and highwaymen for these touring overland. General size is 35 inches, with a darkened metal tip, a Gutta Percha lined shaft, a silver ring beneath the grip and the signature Gutta percha canine head deal with. The firing stud is positioned an inch beneath the deal with, with a pop-up rear sight hid till the weapon is cocked, and the breech is accessed for loading by unscrewing the deal with/firing meeting. The barrel is rifled for six 1/2 inches earlier than increasing to a smoothbore 32 caliber for the rest of the size. Provenance: Gillespie assortment.”
